The Need
A semi-professional ultimate frisbee team needed support in creating engaging email newsletter content in Mailchimp to build an informed community, increase team support, and boost ticket sales.

The Approach
I utilized the newsletter to share in-depth updates about the team’s activities, offering richer content than what is typically shared on social media. Recognizing that the newsletter’s audience was already invested in the team, I provided detailed insights, highlights, and announcements to foster a deeper connection.
To ensure visual appeal and readability, I integrated high-quality photos alongside the text. Key information was strategically placed near or within images to capture attention and encourage readers to engage with the content. By structuring the newsletter thoughtfully, I created an inviting, scrollable format that balanced visual elements with written details.
I also managed and grew the newsletter audience by adding ticket buyers to the mailing list. To maintain trust and high engagement, I prioritized quality over quantity, limiting emails to only essential updates. Typically, newsletters were sent on a monthly or bi-monthly basis, ensuring the audience anticipated and valued each edition.
The Results
Over three years, the newsletter audience grew by 36%, surpassing 1,000 recipients. In 2024, the average open rate was an impressive 61%, demonstrating strong engagement and interest in the content.

A nonprofit theater required professional newsletter management using Mailchimp to effectively promote upcoming performances, foster a sense of community by sharing behind-the-scenes updates, and support fundraising efforts.
My Role

The Approach
I used the newsletter as a storytelling tool to deepen the connection between the theater and its audience. I conducted interviews with volunteers and spotlighted their contributions, strategically timing these features to align with upcoming performances to enhance promotion efforts.
To keep readers informed and engaged, I introduced a recurring “look-ahead” section, providing detailed previews of upcoming events. This feature focused on introducing audiences to lesser-known musical acts, using promotional photos and YouTube links to spark interest and drive attendance.
Visual appeal and readability were central to my design approach. Each newsletter featured high-quality photos—either provided by artists or captured at events—to create a visually engaging experience. I organized content into a clean, scrollable layout, balancing images with concise, compelling text.
I also managed and expanded the newsletter audience by incorporating ticket buyers and donors into the mailing list. Using audience segmentation, I tailored emails to specific groups, ensuring targeted and relevant communication.
The Results
The newsletter received positive feedback from the organization’s members, who appreciated its improved quality and storytelling approach. Over the year, I increased subscribers by 23% and improved the click-through rate by 29%, demonstrating the effectiveness of the approach.

I established a strategic press release schedule, ensuring timely submissions for each upcoming performance, typically one to two weeks before show dates. This proactive planning allowed flexibility to accommodate last-minute requests by integrating them into the schedule, combining releases, or making adjustments as needed.
To create compelling press releases, I highlighted the unique aspects of each performance, emphasizing elements that would resonate with the target audience. When possible, I showcased local talent, spotlighting performers from the region to connect with community pride and interest.
Using a curated list of regional media contacts, I submitted each press release along with a high-quality photo and caption. I tracked coverage by reviewing local publications, which helped me understand their editorial priorities. This feedback loop allowed me to refine my writing and scheduling strategies to maximize publication success and visibility.
